BIO
S.M. has recently returned to the U.S. from Finland where she completed her degree in Environmental Art at the University of Art & Design Helsinki in 2008.  Born in San Francisco and raised in a non-descript Philadelphia suburb, she currently champions a highly itinerant artistic practice based out of a late eighties model station wagon. Residency projects this year began in New York City and have included site-inspired work in North Carolina, Michigan, Colorado, and Nebraska, respectively.

STATEMENT

My current sculptural work unites recognizable forms in foreign situations, employing both cast-off materials and humor to highlight dialogues on fabrication and resourcefulness. American inventions – for example, the clothespin or denim – are of particular interest to me as icons of both the legacy and novelty of innovation. Not content to work in the isolation of the atelier, my practice is also informed by large-scale collaborative undertakings. These environmental projects are truly contemporary efforts to rethink patterns of everyday life through spatial, ecological, and/or community oriented means.
