M6.1DIII OFF-SEASON | CYPRUS
Off-Season was a site-specific project that re-appropriated both the network and the site of the presupposed activities of Manifesta 6, mobilizing the lost network of the former Manifesta 6, Department III student body. The international network of cultural producers represented an engaged group accepted into the Manifesta 6 project, which was scheduled for Nicosia, Cyprus in 2006 and later canceled due to political tensions in the divided city.

The Off-Season participants planned to produce a collectively authored tour guide of the island, written and edited as a large group. During October 2007, we convened in Nicosia, and later dispersed to research, write and photograph off-season, 'off-tourist' locations throughout the island and city on both sides of the border. The project aimed to foster autonomous productivity within a common framework for a plurality of knowledge, ideas, and experiences.

Off-Season was conceived outside of large institutional frameworks, thereby addressing both the limitations of large-scale, formal institutions vs. the self-organized, collaborative activities of organized independents. Furthermore, it resituated the artists as tourists to critique the cultural re-colonization of exotic sites through the proliferation of the biennale structure.

The book was never made.
